Phonics and literacy

Overview of the day’s lessons

 

Reading:

 

Remember to take time out and share a book for at least 5/10 minutes a day.

 

Phonics:

Alternative pronunciation for graphemes

 

Literacy:

LO: To listen to a story from another culture.

 

SC: I can discuss the text.

I can identify the setting and character/s

 

Discuss the story. What did the children like about the story?

Look at some illustrations together of the setting – how is it different to where we live. How would it feel to step into the African plains. Ask children to imagine what they could see, hear, feel etc.

 

Activity

Children think about the setting of the story.

They create a drawing of the African plains.

Geography

Activity:

Recap the continents song:

 

Talk about places you have been on holiday. Find them on a map or globe together. Which continent are they in? Look at your map of the world and point to Kenya. Ask your child what they think Kenya is like?

Look at the power point and discuss.

Look carefully at the flag of Kenya. Make your own flag or if you prefer print out the flag sheet.

To learn about why it is an important place to many people.

  •         I understand why a mosque is an important place by describing what happens there.
  •         I can list rules for how to behave in a mosque.

 

Activity

Look at the Powerpoint ‘Places of worship: Muslim Mosques’.

 

Look at the pictures of inside a Mosque? What is it like?

 

Look at the slide ‘Showing Respect’ find out what people do before worship in a Mosque.

 

Watch the BBC clip below. This will give you more of an idea about what the inside of a Mosque looks like and also how Muslims worship.
