SC: I can discuss the text. I can discuss new word meanings. I can identify the setting and the characters.

Activity:
Display the front cover of ‘Bringing the rain to Kapiti plain’ and ask children to discuss with their parents. Where do they think this story is set? What are the clues on the cover? Explain that this text is an African text. Look at the first page together – there’s some language that may be new to the children. Can they spot any words that they are unsure of? Look at the way the language builds up throughout the text.

Activity: Using a number line follow the white rose sheet. The children who are working within 10 can use the subtraction sheet to 10. There is also an extra sheet (optional) for those children who want to do some more (numbers within 20).
