Primary School Sport Funding

Sports Premium at Great Barford Primary Academy, 2023-24

National Context

As with every Primary in the country, Great Barford Primary Academy has been provided with additional funding to improve the provision of Physical Education and sport in our school. Our funding for this year 2023/24 will be £17,585.

Our Principles

  • To ensure the funding is ring-fenced for Physical Education and School Sport at our school.
  • To ensure that decisions on spending impact directly on the quality of the Physical Education that our children receive.
  • To recognise that any investment in specialist teaching of children must be done in conjunction and collaboration with teachers to enhance the long-term impact of Physical Education at Great Barford Primary Academy.
  • To identify the priority areas for Physical Education and Sport in school and spend the funding accordingly.

Our Vision

  • It is our aim at Great Barford Primary Academy to provide the opportunity for our children to safely experience a range of sporting activities to enhance their skills, as well as for their fun and enjoyment.
  • Through carefully planned PE and sports activities, we aim to provide high quality PE teaching. This will ensure that all children are happy and enjoy PE, thus raising participation levels both in and out of school. This in turn will promote healthy lifestyles, hopefully for life.
  • We aim to ensure that within their own level of ability all children can achieve and experience success, thereby enabling them to reach their full potential.
  • We value the benefits of PE and sport to build children’s self confidence, esteem and self worth which is character building and essential for our pupil’s development.
  • We aim to provide opportunities for all children to experience competition at various levels both individually and as part of a team.
  • We aim to promote a lifelong love of sport and physical activity by encouraging enjoyment and fun in activity at school.

Our vision echoes that of the Department of Education whose vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium Funding is:

“ALL pupils leaving primary school are to be physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.”

The funding has been provided to ensure impact against the following OBJECTIVE:

“To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools.”

It is important to emphasise that the focus of spending must lead to long lasting impact against the vision that will live on well beyond the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding.

It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:

1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles

2. The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement

3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport

4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils

5. Increased participation in competitive sport

Our current Sport and PE provision

  • The school curriculum currently provides our children with a wide range of learning opportunities in games, dance, gymnastics, swimming, athletics and outdoor & adventurous activities.
  • Our staff deliver P.E. across the age range from the Nursery setting to Year 6.
  • We deliver a block of swimming lessons to all children in Years 2 and 4 each year. Any child that has not met the required level of swimming competence by the end of the Year 4 block is given the opportunity for a third swimming block in Year 6.
  • Our school also offers a wide range of opportunities for children beyond the requirements of the National Curriculum. There are a variety of sports clubs offered over the course of each year: football, multi-skills and gymnastics.
  • The school also participates in a number of local inter-school competitions including football, indoor and outdoor athletics, tag rugby, kwik cricket and gymnastics. Teams regularly qualify for the East Bedfordshire tournaments and often for the School Games County Finals.

PE and Sports Provision at Great Barford Primary Academy – the coming year

The opportunities available at Great Barford Primary Academy for enhancing the provision of PE and Sport are huge. The dedicated staff are positive and enthusiastic about PE, Sport and Physical Activity provision, from teachers to teaching assistants and mid day supervisors. Our ‘people’ are our greatest asset and this resource will be explored thoroughly this year.

Provision of physical activities at lunchtime is a key focus for the coming year. There is scope for more structure in providing adult or child (through sports leaders) led activities and this will continue to be developed in detail. The implementation lunchtime clubs and the extended employment of our Lunchtime Activity Leader will encourage children with low activity levels to work towards the daily recommended ‘one hour’ of moderate to vigorous activity. eds to be considering and exploring the opportunities that this potential extra money could provide.
